Hillsborough river state park11/12/2022 ![]() When we booked the campsite, there were not many sites available and our options were limited. It was a bit of pain to back into, but is definitely doable with a bit of patience and of heavy dose of tenacity. If you have a bigger trailer than our 17′ Jayco, you might want to select another site. It is made for smaller trailers or tent camping. Site 113, which was our site was a bit wonky. Most the of campsites at Hillsborough River State Park were roomy and well laid out. The suspension bridge is one such structure that is a prominent feature to the state park. A few of the original buildings and structures can still be found today. It was a project of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) of the 1930’s. Hillsborough River State Park officially opened in 1938 as one of Florida’s first State Parks. This well loved state park is located near Tampa, making it a great weekend get-away for central Floridians. Listening to good music inspires me to capture nature's beauty on the camera in different aspects that also make me recall many beautiful music pieces that I've heard. Our family enjoyed a quiet and relaxing weekend of camping at Hillsborough River State Park located in Thonotosassa, Florida. I am also a student at European School of Music where I learned that music and nature have a lot in common. I have 3 years of amateur weather forecasting experience, having studied a lot of meteorology basics over the years. My other hobbies include chess, science, old music, and meteorology. I now attend Washington & Lee University and am exploring Virginia and West Virginia. Today, you can find me out in the woods every weekend, whether it's on an official trail or bushwhacking through cross-country terrain without any paths. Throughout the years that followed, as I slowly ran out of popular hiking trails in my area, I began to search for and hike in more seldom-visited areas. During 20, I began to expand my trips into adjacent states, as well as into the wilder National Forest areas rather than just State Parks. Originally based out of Atlanta, Georgia, I started out by occasionally hiking short trails throughout well-known Georgia State Parks. I'm 21 years old and have been hiking since 2011. I'm an avid outdoor explorer and a hobbyist landscape photographer. An unexpected closure of the suspension bridge forced me to abandon my plan of hiking the Baynard Trail, but I fulfilled the rest of my plan. I would finish by returning along the south side of the Rapids Trail. My plan was to hike the north side of the Rapids Trail to the Baynard Trail, then hike the Baynard Trail, before completing the Florida Trail Loop counter-clockwise. This hike occurred on Wednesday, July 27th, 2016. The loop trail then circles back along the river, with numerous superb views of this urban yet wild waterway. The Baynard Trail provides a quick excursion on the north side of the river, and the more remote Florida Trail Loop, which was built by the Florida Trail Association, is your best for a more remote hike that explores a wild and lush swampy area north of the Hillsborough River. The Rapids Trail provides an easy access to the Hillsborough River Rapids, a unique sight this far south in such a flat landscape. For the hiker, the park has several trails. This state park, which is home to one of the southernmost sets of rapids in Florida - a set of Class II rapids on the Hillsborough River - as well as a suspension bridge that dates back to the CCC days. Hillsborough River State Park is one of the most popular outdoor recreation destinations in the Tampa Bay area, and for good reason. ![]()
